There, I was going to write a book about the apprentice-designed desert shelters. I had been in negotiations with the school to initiate the project at the beginning of October. I was going to become (once again) an active member of the community there and serve the school by imparting any knowledge and wisdom acquired in the real world to the faculty-starved apprentice body. In return, they were going to support me and my efforts to make the publication-to-be a reality. It seemed like the perfect symbiotic relationship for everyone involved and an unbelievable opportunity that would have launched a new career path for yours truly. The timing was impeccable too. I was needed to move anyway out of my house in San Antonio and my internship at Lake|Flato was coming to an end with my project waning. I was tremendously eager and excited about the planets aligning in such a way to make my dreams possible.
At the beginning of September, I was getting ready to start thinking about considering my Texas Exodus. It was about that time when I got a phone call. It was Victor Sidy, the FLLWSA Dean. He had unpleasant news. Apparently, when my proposal came up for discussion at the bi-weekly Senior Fellowship meeting, it received a reaction that was described at best as "lukewarm". This was not anticipated by Victor, nor myself (especially considering the overwhelmingly positive reception I had received during my visit to Taliesin in July. ) The old folks questioned why they should support the project financially (this is a reasonable concern, I guess). They were also skeptical about my motives as someone who didn't graduate from the program (this however, is not).
Now, this is all speculation on my part, but I think the reason for this is because of the recently released book about Frank Lloyd Wright and the Taliesin Fellowship. The book - a 700 page expose' revealing the "untold story" - does not portray them or their admiration of Mr. Wright kindly throughout its sprawling narrative. (I know this because I can't put the book down.) Anyway, its easy to understand their apprehension to allow another person to come in and write a book, considering that the author at some point had their cooperation, probably spending weeks at a time conducting research on site. I should point out that my intentions are pure and the topic of my book - the shelters - is completely innocuous. Even if I'm wrong - if I've read way too much into this - I think I'll stick by this possibility. Its just less to be taken personally in my already deflated disposition.
To make an already long story short, it was time to initiate Plan B: Stay in San Antonio, but move into a new apartment, and get a new full-time design/architecture gig. Victor and I decided to put my return to Taliesin off for a year. In the meantime, I could apply for grants and whore my proposal around to potential publishers. Despite my disappointment, the debilitating residual soreness from my unfortunate encounter with an Oldsmobile, and the overwhelming time constraint to find a new apartment, a new job, and meet a few deadlines, I am simply glad that Victor let me know a whole month before my planned arrival in Arizona. It wasn't a lot of time, sure, but it was a hell of a lot longer than, say, a week. Quite honestly, knowing the track record of my former school, there always was a little clump in the back of my mind that anticipated such a snag. I just really wanted this self-manifested opportunity to not actually become to-good-to-be-true.
On the other hand, since we're being honest here, I should also bring something else to the table: I wasn't all together ready to leave San Antonio...

With the decision to stay firming up, I turned to finding a new home. There wasn't a lot of time for this, with deadlines at work and our annual Lake|Flato retreat to Ted Flato's ranch 3ish hours due west of town on the West Nueces River. I think all the pressure to have a splashingly good time in the healing waters cured my neck and shoulder pains.
The following weekend was of course my 27th Birthday Bike Ride in the Rain Extravaganza. Even though there were festivities to contend with - I buckled down and found an apartment. It's really great! It's in the historic neighborhood - Monte Vista, about a dozen or so blocks from my old place behind Stephanie and Patrick's house. I moved the very next weekend into a large house built prior to The Great War. Sometime after, it was converted into nine apartments. Mine is the converted attic on the third floor. The interior has about as much space (maybe a little more) than my old place. The kitchen is bigger and not open to the elements (someone can actually hang out in it while I cook, or even someones). The bedroom is huge with a designated craft nook. There is a sun-drenched living room. My bathroom is tight and lacks the luxuriousness of my old one without the claw-foot tub, but shall suffice. I even have a little crawl-in meditation space that was at one point a laundry chute. The clincher though, was the wrap-around roof terrace! And it is glorious! I have a spectacular view of downtown, and an unobstructed view due west to watch the sunset. Come on over - just bring the champagne.
It's twice as much as my old place a month. How am I to afford it? Well...I'm still working on that part. Money is tight right now, but I am dedicated to becoming financially solvent. I've been interviewing around town and I am very optimistic about being employed with a new position by November. Though I would love to remain at Lake|Flato, it seems for the best that I branch out and explore other options.
In the meantime, I am settling into the new place, reveling in a nightly sunset, and enjoying finishing up the project I've been working on at the architecture firm. It's been such an amazing opportunity to really comprehend all that goes into a building. We are really down to the nitty-gritty nuts & bolts for our building. It's fascinating that each day I learn a new piece of the puzzle. I just hope that one day, it actually gets built.
